Continuing Coverage on “That’s it.” November 9, 2006

As of this moment, I am really liking the straight endpin. My tone has already improved. Lee’s point is starting to make more sense now. He said that I play very forcibly, and Rabbath plays very gently. That means I’ve been playing the slanted bass as if it were a straight bass for the past some odd years. I’m not sure about stabilizing the bass yet. Mr. Hurst said that my bass wiggles around when I shift which means that I don’t have complete control of the bass. I’ll worry about that more after this two week straight endpin trial period.

I noticed today that I was playing with bass virtually vertical at one point even though I’m using a Rabbath endpin. Tomorrow I’m going to find a straight endpin and use it. I’ll try this for two weeks and finally decide what’s the best endpin for me.
Fall break, Mr. Hurst, and the last few days October 14, 2006

I finally did it. I found him! I got a lesson from Mr. Hurst during fall break and it was great. He recorded our lesson on a cassatte tape, so I’ll need to blog about it in depth with a cassette player near me. But mainly, I’ve changed my routine, and I’m dropping Dragonetti and moving onto Bottesini.

This week has been very busy, so I haven’t kept up with my blog, but times are changing. My lesson with Lee went well. I should consider using harmonics more so that I can hear the correct intonation more so. I should also consider playing a drone when I do scales. Problem: I have to find one. . . . grrr. He also should me the usefulness of not pressing the string down for a nice vibrato. I have to see what Mr. Hurst says about this–yay, I get a lesson with him on Tuesday.
Can you play faster? Let’s find out. September 27, 2006

I heard it for countless number of times that one shouldn’t practice something at a faster bpm until he’s perfected it. Well I know you shouldn’t “practice” it at a faster tempo, but the idea of telling yourself that you shouldn’t play something at faster tempo because you can’t do it is . . . dumb. I prefer warming into a good tempo, practicing it at that tempo for a few, then trying to run your hands to they die–just for the fun of it. Seem, I’m one of those people who dare to play faster. Perhaps not practice faster, but playing faster is good.
Warm down September 8, 2006

Ms. Dallinger said that according to studies, warming down prevents damage to athletes. I think I should have remembered this yesterday since I have a neck pain today. So I’ll warm down from here in.

For now on, by authority of Mr. Hurst and Burton Kaplan, I shall take a day of rest from practicing each week. And with permission from Joy, this day shall be Sunday.
Pivot for faster passages/Practice tempos August 5, 2006

I’ve always noticed that I have a problem vibratoing when I’m in a pivoted state. I can do it, but it’s akward as hell. After talking to Mike Gorman about this, we have concluded that fingerings change depending on tempo.
Fast movements need the pivot to cover more notes in a quicker manner.
Slow movements can do with lots of shifting, enabling a juicy vibrato.
This also affects the tempo at which to practice things. Kind of . . .

Time: 120 min.
Today was a wonderful practice, mainly because I practiced in my mom’s AC room. I’ll try to do that from here on in.
Anyways,I started by sight-reading some of Dragonetti mov. III, then I worked on the E major scale. I even managed to get the slurred E’s up 7. I even did the beethoven 7th rhythm and alternating bowing rhythm. Then I worked on the Nanny etudes. Then I finished with Kreutzer no. 5 and Fiorillo no. 18. It’s been a while since I’ve worked on them.
Today, my scapulae were fine everytime I checked them. YAY Then, holding the bow farther in seems to have it’s benefits, my sound and control seem better. There’s a few things different, but I’ll bet used to it. I should really bring this up with Mr. Hurst though.
