How tight should my bow hair be? November 6, 2006

I’ve heard lots of ideas, and I’ve tried most of them. I noticed that I like to play with a lighter string tension in practice and solo, but I use a tight one when I rip in Orchestra. I’m talking to Lee about it.
Is it bad to move while playing (slowly)? September 15, 2006

Miyamura says it’s inefficient. Lee and Ellison say to lean. I see both sides. Being static almost hurts me. So I’m confused.

Pretty self-explanatory. I just have an easier time spiccatoing faster closer to the center of the bow.
How does one vibrato in the high positions? August 6, 2006

I can manage a vibrato up until 5th and 6th position (Rabbath pos.), but after that, it sounds like crap. The problem seems to stem from the fact that my original motions for vibrato don’t work with such an extended arm. I think I’ll ask Mr. Hurst about this when I get the chance.

Time: 20 min.
Today was a short day because I used as a warm-up for a concert; I played in two band pieces for PMI. Anyways, I just went over the band piece Overture for Band and then worked on the Nanny Etudes.
During the concert, I noticed that when I really let loose, my posture breaks. I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing. I mean, I didn’t do it that much during the concert. Maybe it’s okay to break the posture. But does it affect the tone?
Does more hair necessarily mean more volume? July 13, 2006

I question this because volume deals with amplitude, yet more bow hair adds to the area of pull. So I have my doubts. Doc says it does to a limit, but bow speed, bow placement, and weight are the main drives in volume. Elton’s not sure, but it works in his head: Having more hair is like having two arms instead of one to pull something. So we’re going to experiment on it. Come to think about, having more hair on the string would also greatly affect timbre.

I was reading an article from American String Teacher, Issue November 2005, that talked about balancing the muscles of the front and back of the body. I get the idea that I’m not supposed to over stretch my left shoulder forwards to reach notes, but I’m not sure. I’m going to ask Mike about that today. Also, the article gives good stretching exercises.

Everytime I do this, I hurt. I must be doing something wrong. I’ll ask Gorman.
